A scandal
Lorraine
Dexter literally forced the car to fly as he raced towards the house like a man on a wild goose chase. I couldn’t blame him. The fear in Victoria’s voice was unmistakable. The situation was really serious.
My anxiety skyrocketed when I saw a few neighbors gathered in front of the house. Thankfully, the cops didn’t let them in. I hated when my privacy was intruded upon and I knew Dexter disliked it as well.
Victoria rushed to her brother as soon as she sighted him, and leaned on him for a hug. Even though we were sworn enemies, I understood what it meant to have someone hold you with an assurance that everything will be fine.
“It’s so scary. My God, it really is.” She couldn’t stop saying.
My curiosity took the better part of me, but I couldn’t go in until the cops had cleared us. Dexter had been snagged by one of the cops who engaged him in a serious conversation.
Victoria kept passing glares at me like I was the cause of her problem but I ignored her, being enveloped by my worry.
Dexter and the cop veered towards us, their faces bearing unreadable expressions. Victoria skidded along while I waited for them to start talking. All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
“Hi, Lorraine, I’m Detective Steven. I’ll be in charge of this case so I’ll need your cooperation so that the culprit who broke in can be caught.” He informed us, flashing a wary glance at me.
“I promise to give you all the cooperation you’ve asked for, but we want to know what happened and I’m sure Victoria here can tell us more about it.” Dexter suggested.
She drew closer to her brother and held onto his arm. “I was waiting for you to come before I tell him anything, but the main problem is inside the house, not here.”
A scared countenance veiled her face and I decided that whatever happened must have been petrifying.
“We’ve taken a look at it before, but we have to look at it meticulously again. The window in your living room was broken through. I’m guessing that’s how he got in, and the forensic department has done what needs to be done. So don’t worry, we’ll catch whoever it is.” He said quite confidently. “We’ll also need to check the cameras around the house so we can get clues.”
“That’s not a problem. I’ll make the footage available to be watched.” Dexter concurred.
We strode in, the detective ahead of us while Dexter held my hand in a firm but gentle way.
The sight that greeted us when we entered the house had me gasping for air. It was indeed hair-rising as the red colored writing only screamed one thing, and that was me getting out of the house.
The inscription stated boldly:
‘LEAVE HIS HOUSE OR I’LL COME FOR YOU, MY DEAR LORRAINE.’
I collapsed on the floor with Dexter hurrying to keep me steady. The fact that the delinquent added ‘dear’ to my name made it all creepy.
This was what the person wanted and sadly, I was giving him the wanted reaction.
“How did this happen?” I asked rhetorically.
Victoria decided to act like a human this time and answer without being bitchy. “I’d just returned from an outing with Emilia when I saw a shadow jump out from that window.” She pointed towards the broken window and continued. “I was too gobsmacked to follow and know who the person might be and that was when I saw the painting. I quickly dialed 911 and fortunately, the cops were on patrol along this area.”
Dexter had helped to put me on the sofa so I could relax, but my mind wasn’t cooperating. “I’ll get you a cup of coffee.” He caressed my hair and slowly I began to feel better.
Few minutes later, we were all seated and ready for some questioning. Detective Steven’s kind eyes made me trust him a bit. I was tired of being pushed around because of my past. Whoever instigated it must be brought to book.
“Lorraine, I’d like you to be honest with me.” He requested and I nodded. “Do you know anyone who could go to the extent of breaking into the house just to threaten you?” His question was penitent.
Of course, I knew several people didn’t like me. Most of them were verbal about it, but I wasn’t sure any of them could get to the extent of doing such a horrible thing.
“I can’t think of anyone, Detective.” I answered truthfully as Dexter’s strong arm wrapped my body.
His touch was soothing and on the other hand, arousing sensual feelings that were supposed to be dormant because of how terrified I was. Maybe I should have given him a little distance so that I’d focus on the detective’s questions, but I enjoyed it too much to move away.
“Are you sure there’s no one?” He reiterated.
I nodded in affirmation. It was normal to have people who didn’t like you, so I couldn’t mention their names as suspects. That would be very unfair.
He got to his feet and Dexter did the same. “I’ll keep in touch, Mr Hemmingway.” He shook hands with him.
“I’m counting on it. I don’t want to have my woman looking behind her while moving forward just because of some nitwit who doesn’t know where to do his shit.” Dexter replied, his voice strong and bearing a warning.
My body tingled as I heard him call me his woman. It felt so good to be acknowledged by him.
Detective Steven didn’t say anything else or they’d be arguing so he left. Then Victoria decided that it was time to remind me why I disliked her.
“So while I was out here fighting for my life, you were out there having the best time of your miserable life with my brother?” She scowled.
I jumped to my feet immediately, ready to put her in her place. “My life ain’t miserable, honey!” I shot back then a realisation dawned on me. “Hold up, how do you know about our outing? We didn’t tell anyone about it.”
She quickly picked her phone from the chair, began to scroll then she flashed the screen at me. Dexter who went to shut the door returned and stood behind me.
“What the hell is…” He didn’t need to complete his statement as the video on her phone gave him the answer.
Apparently, some unscrupulous people posted our performance at the parlor online and the videos were trending with several annoying hashtags.
Dexter and I exchanged glances while I shook my head, walking away.
The scandal I’d been trying to avoid had happened. Only God knew what would happen tomorrow.
