Vera said, “If it’s not the influence of some negative item, does that mean my dad genuinely thinks that woman is better than my mom? My mom was the top socialite in Jipsburg City back in the day. Suitors would line up just to date her.
“My dad took years to win her over. When I was around ten, my dad started seeing someone on the side. At first, my mom was oblivious. But once she found out, my dad still didn’t neglect her because of that woman.
“Eventually, my mom didn’t care whether my dad had someone on the side. To her, those women were just distractions bought with money, and I think my dad saw it that way too. But now…” Vera trailed off, feeling increasingly uneasy.
Skylar wasn’t in the right frame of mind today, and she listened to Vera’s complaints without much emotion. Finally, she replied in a flat tone, “Just encourage Mrs. Ruell to stay positive.”
“Sure, I’ll talk to her,” Vera responded.
“If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up,” Skylar said.
“Wait a moment!”
“Is there something else?”
Vera hesitated for a moment before continuing, “I just ran into Ned at Apollo Hospital. It was my first time seeing him in person. He looks just like Joe–almost identical. There’s hardly any difference. I have this wild thought–do you think he could actually be Joe?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Vera felt ridiculous. She realized she was getting carried away by all the TV dramas and novels she had been consuming lately.
Still, she couldn’t shake the urge to share it with Skylar.
Skylar paused, then said, “That’s not very likely..
Vera laughed nervously. “I’m just throwing out a random idea. I’ve been so bored lately, watching too many TV dramas and reading novels. Don’t take it seriously.”
“Got it.‘
After ending the call, Skylar felt a bit lost in thought. She recalled Ned and couldn’t help but ponder Vera’s words. Part of her secretly wished that Ned really was Joe.
Later that evening, she made some instant pasta for dinner.
Janine had called her half an hour ago, asking her to come home for dinner, but she made an
excuse that she had already eaten. novelbin
For now, she didn’t want Janine and the others to see her in a bad mood–some emotions
needed to be digested alone.
Just as she
finished her pasta, Natalie called.
“Skye, I’m so glad you’re still in Jipsburg. I need you right now. I was in a car accident, and I’m so scared.”
Skylar’s expression changed immediately. “A car accident? Where are you? Don’t be scared. Did you call the police? Did you dial 911?”
“I’m at the hospital right now, at Apollo Hospital.” Natalie sobbed pitifully.
“Just wait for me.”
30 minutes later, Skylar arrived at Apollo Hospital. After asking around at the emergency department, she quickly located Natalie.
Natalie lay on the hospital bed, a bandage wrapped around her head, and her face was bruised. The leg that was exposed was also wrapped up.
When she saw Skylar, she couldn’t hold back her tears. “Skylar, you’re here! I didn’t want to tell my parents because I didn’t want to scare them. I’m disfigured, and my leg… has several stitches. The car that hit me was so brutal.”
“How are you feeling now? What did the doctor say? Did they do any detailed examinations?” Skylar felt a little relieved. The fact that Natalie could cry meant her injuries weren’t too severe.
Natalie replied, “They took some X–rays and said I have a mild concussion.”
“What about the driver who hit you?” Skylar asked.
Natalie looked up just as someone approached. She pointed and said, “It’s her.” Skylar turned to see who it was and was taken aback to discover it was Rosa.
