MISTAKE 42
Chapter 42: His confession
“Then why did you let it happen?” Hunter could not understand why it had gotten to this did not want it. He had never thought it was possible for women to reject Daniel. If Daniel wanted her, with his means and methods, she would not be able to get a divorce that easily.
“Did she not like you, so she decided to divorce you?” James frowned.
he
“How is that possible? The few times I saw her, she looked to be very in love with him,” Ethan said, then realized that Daniel had finished a bottle and was taking another.
you do something?” James frowned.
“Anya called, begging me to talk to her. She said she had an emergency. When I refused. She threatened that if I don’t talk to her, I should come back with divorce papers. I was angry she was pestering me and thought it was probably time to end the contract. So, I sent divorce papers to her, and she signed and vanished before I even came home,” Daniel said softly, but they all still heard him. The private room descended into silence.
“You…” Hunter was at a loss for words. He was the only one amongst them who was married. ” I have a good relationship with my wife, yet if I did that, I would be divorced in a second. Talk more about the both of you that only have a contract. How could you make such a basic mistake if you did not want a divorce?” Hunter asked. He could not believe that this was his friend, who was levelheaded and intelligent.
Their faces of confusion and disbelief at his action were the last straw for Daniel to snap. It was as though all the pain he had denied, all the agitation he had held in this past month, exploded all at
once.
“What?” Daniel asked fiercely.
“I just came back from Canada, Daniel,” Ethan said.
Daniel raised a brow, his body swaying.
“I didn’t know how to tell you, but I don’t think Selene is who she says she is,” Ethan said, and Daniel paused.
“What does that mean?”
Chapter 42 His confession
“I have this friend who is a plastic surgeon. I saw Selene’s file on his table and was worried since you like her so much. I thought something happened… but…” Ethan paused, hesitating.
“Talk already,” James urged him.
“Well, long story short, Selene has been having her face done regularly to look more like your wife. She has been doing that for years,” Ethan said.
“Wait, that is not her face?” Hunter asked.
“If it isn’t her face, then Daniel’s wife is.” James said.
“It seems suspicious. Why would her family help her pretend to be your childhood lover? Daniel I suspect it was Anya all along. Your grandfather was right,” Ethan said.
“Are you saying Anya is Selene? But Anya is a single child of her mother. The Celine I knew had a brother, or was I two?” Daniel found that his memory was hazy.
His heart raced. Could he have recognized the wrong woman?
“Daniel, my hospital still has a sample of your childhood lover’s blood. I can arrange to have it tested with Selene,” Hunter offered.
‘Sure,” Daniel said in a barely audible voice. He looked defeated.
“Stop drinking,” Ethan reached for the bottle, but Daniel was completely wasted already.
“She did not even hesitate. She did not fight the prenuptial agreement. She did not take her clothes; she did not take the money. She just signed the papers and vanished. No contact, no
address, nothing.” Daniel’s frustration the past few months was released in a second. The alcohol had done such a good job, Daniel’s friends were tempted to give it a salary. It had broken their friend till he was barely conscious, sprawled on the seat, muttering his wife’s name like a prayer.
“My Anya,” he muttered as his friends took him home.
Daniel woke up the next day to a splitting headache. He barely managed to open his eyes when he saw his mother’s face hovering over him like a ghost.
“Do you rea
you regret it?” she asked, and she stared at her for a while. He thought this was the same dream he had had in months. In his barely three hours of sleep, his mother still found a way to appear in his dreams and ask him this same question.
“Yes,” he answered for the first time.
“You deserve it,” she said and got up from the bed to leave. Only then did he notice that this wasn’t a dream.
His phone vibrated. He looked at it. It was a message from Hunter. The rest of the of the results for Selene’s DNA test had returned. She was not his childhood lover.
“She is a fake,” Daniel said.
“Who?” Wendy asked.
“Selene. She has been using plastic surgery to look more like Anya. I just confirmed her DNA is different from the Selene I knew,” he answered.
“So, Anya is the real one?” Wendy asked in confusion.
“I don’t know,” Daniel answered weakly. Looking at his defeated face, Wendy snorted.
“Are you in
the world to mock me now, mom?” he asked.
“You were brought back at night, muttering ‘My Anya, all night. Am I wrong for
commenting?” She paused at the door and asked. When he saw her cold expression, he got the feeling that she wanted him to hurt.
“Why does it seem like Mother is pleased by my pain?” he asked, smiling bitterly.
‘Because you deserve it. That pitiful girl did nothing wrong but still liked someone like you, and you behaved like a beast,” she said coldly.
“What a way to twist the knife stabbing my heart right now, mom. Besides, no one in this family helped her.” he said with a bitter laugh.
“So what? When. Have I ever interfered in the business of you boys? She was your wife. No matter how much you dislike her, there are things that you can’t do. Are you feeling pain because of a few words I said? I have not even taken out the hammer to nail you to your coffin, and you are acting as though you have died,” she asked.
“What could be worse than this? What could be worse than coldly divorcing my wife, then going crazy wanting her back?” he asked. He felt he had reached the very lowest point of his

“I can tell you. Coldly divorcing your wife one day after her mother dies, then going crazy and wanting her back,” she said, and he froze so quickly, he might as well have turned to stone.
“How about that, my dear undead, is this beheading enough to make sure you never revive again?” she asked and made to turn away, but he panicked.
“What do you mean, explain it to me? Her mother is dead? Then when she called, saying she had an emergency,” he trailed off. His mother, who was about to leave, paused and saw her
son’s full
eyes with tears..
“I’ve lost her, haven’t I? She hates me,” he muttered. For some reason, Wendy could not watch. She had raised this child herself. She knew how stable he was at all times. Seeing him break before her eyes hurt her. She opened the door and left the room.
Wendy went down the stairs and entered the kitchen to cook. By noon, James arrived oddly with a little gingerhead trailing behind him. Mrs. Shaw saw this girl and frowned.
“James, you are here. Is this your friend?” She asked, and James had a subtle look in his eyes as Selene froze in confusion. There is no way he believed that Wendy did not know who this girl was. It was Selene
